“Cloughy” wins National Fisheries Award.
Dave Clough, Fisheries Biologist Recognized
Ottawa, On: Known by friends and colleagues as “Cloughy”, Lantzville resident, Dave Clough was recognized today at Canada’s 2010 Recreational Fishery Awards Ceremony at the Museum of Civilization. Created in 1989 by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the annual Awards recognize Canadians for outstanding work undertaken to improve or protect the recreational fishery. This work has the added value of bringing about better fishing and wise development of related industries, including tourism.
Mr. Clough is a fisheries biologist who has worked closely with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and concerned citizens; he has trained up stream keepers and volunteers for hatcheries, habitat enhancement and sound ecological stewardship.
James Lunney, Member of Parliament, for Nanaimo-Alberni said, “Dave is well known throughout Vancouver Island; his remarkable work over 30 years has had a major impact already and will affect generations of island residents and salmon alike for years to come.”
Clough was instrumental in establishing the Tofino Streamkeepers. Over the last 15 years, Dave has been developing programs to educate school children on an on-going basis. “Salmonoids in the Classroom” and “Gently Down the Stream” are two of the programs Dave has helped develop.
Dave Chitty of the Alberni Valley Enhancement Association has worked closely with Clough over many years. Clough is greatly admired says Chitty; “tireless, hands-on, driving force, one-of-a-kind guy, instrumental, passionate, great educator and enthusiastic” are some of the terms used by friends and colleagues referring to Dave Clough.
Regrettably, Mr. Clough was unable to attend the ceremony to receive his award due to an illness in the family.
“Dave has influenced, encouraged and motivated hundreds of volunteers in our community. It is great to see his outstanding contribution recognized with this National award. On behalf of the citizens of Nanaimo-Alberni, I extend our deepest appreciation and congratulations,” concluded Lunney.
